Children’s Literary Awards Around the World

Join Kim Kyung-yun, a critic of children’s literature and former judge for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, for a discussion of children’s literature around the world. She is here to introduce the Hans Christian Anderson Award, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava (BIB) Golden Apples, and the Caldecott Medal and discuss the value and significance of these time-honored and respected awards.

The Complicated Corridor Between Childhood and Adulthood

Adolescence is an age of feeling the urge to break free. There are comforting stories that may be a lifeline to them. Sometimes lending an attentive ear can be just as comforting as cheerful reminders that everything will be just fine. Let’s meet Lee Kkoch-nim, Jo Woo-ri, and Hwang Bo-reum, to ponder the future and consider the challenges that arise in the eventful transition from childhood to adolescence.

How Picture Books Represent Society

It would be nice if children were always full of joy and cheer, but we mustn’t disregard the darker side of life. How should picture books present topics such as sickness, sorrow, pain or despair to children? This seminar offers a discussion on ways to talk about reality without falling prey to either heartless pessimism or naive optimism.
